How to apply filters when comparing surveys

You can apply demographic filters to the reports in the Compare section of AskYourTeam. By default, the filter you choose is applied to every survey you are comparing, wherever the values match. If a value does not exist in one of the surveys (for example a team that was renamed or split), a review step lets you pick the equivalent, or skip that survey for that filter.

You can also choose to filter each survey separately if you prefer.

Example #1

You want to compare how the department 'Technology' responded across the Have Your Say 2023 and Have Your Say 2024 surveys.

With the same filter applied to every survey (the default), you only need to choose Department > Information Technology once, and it applies to both the Have Your Say 2023 and Have Your Say 2024 surveys.

Example #2

You want to compare how the department 'Information Technology' responded across the Have Your Say 2023 and Have Your Say 2024 surveys. However, the Information Technology team split into two teams at the end of 2023: 'Infrastructure' and 'Software Development'.

Choose Department > Information Technology once. Because 'Information Technology' exists in the 2023 survey but not in 2024, the button changes to Review. On the review screen, for the 2024 survey you pick the equivalent options, Infrastructure and Software Development, against Information Technology. Everything that already matched is left as is.

To apply demographic filters in the Compare section

  1. Select Compare from the left menu.
  2. Select the surveys you want to compare.
  3. Select the Reports tab, then Apply demographic filters.
  4. Leave the toggle "Apply the same filters to every survey being compared, where the values match" on. This is the default.
  5. Choose a demographic category from the list on the left (for example Department), then select the option(s) on the right (for example Information Technology). The category list comes from your latest survey.
  6. Check the status at the bottom of the window:
    • If it reads "Matched in all surveys. Apply to compare.", select Apply.
    • If some values do not match, the button reads Review. Select Review, then for each survey pick the equivalent option(s), or leave a value blank to skip that filter for that survey. Then select Apply.
  7. Select See results.

Prefer to filter each survey separately? Turn the toggle off. You can then select a survey, choose its filters, repeat for each survey, and select See results.

How to clear demographic filters

To clear demographic filters in the Compare section, use the "Filters applied" bar below the report tabs:

  • Select the x on any filter chip to remove just that filter, or
  • Select Clear all to remove every filter.

You can also click Apply demographic filters and select Clear filters (or Clear all filters in the per-survey view) inside the window.

How do I know if filters are applied?

When filters are applied, a "Filters applied" bar appears below the report tabs, with a chip for each demographic filter, for example "Department: Information Technology".

Because you are comparing several surveys, a chip can also tell you how the filter is applied across them:

  • A normal chip means the same values are applied to every survey.
  • "varies" means different values are applied per survey, for example after a review where a team was split.
  • A coverage count like "1 of 3" means the filter only covers some of the surveys.

Hover over a chip that shows "varies" or a coverage count to see a per-survey breakdown, listing each survey and its values, or "not filtered" where a survey has none. Select a chip to reopen and edit the filter, or the x to remove it.
